Adrial Enterprises from Westlake Girls High School was the overwhelming winner of the round of Awards confirmed yesterday in North Shore’s Young Enterprise Scheme. The team of year 12 and 13 students from Westlake Girls High School won all three awards presented during the afternoon at North Harbour Stadium. The most prestigious was the Oral Presentation Award that was judged on the content of presentations made by 13 teams from five North Shore secondary schools and one from Rodney. Each five to six-minute presentation was conducted for judges, teachers, parents and fellow students.

The Managing Director for Adrial Enterprises, Alice Gatland, accepted the winning plaque for the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme Oral Presentation, from judges, Seeby Woodhouse, Managing Director for Orcon Internet and Barry Perrow, Senior Advisor for Spicers Wealth Management. Second prize went to Image Converters of Takapuna Grammar and third to Tick Tock, from Glenfield College.

Earlier, former principal of Massey University, Albany (now Enterprise North Shore trustee), Ian Watson, had judged 24 Young Enterprise Scheme business plans for the Enterprise North Shore Business Planning Award. This was won by Adrial Enterprises and presented to the school team by North Shore City Council Deputy Mayor, Dianne Hale. The team is developing and marketing a digital fitness product, called the A-trainer. Second and third prizes for Business Planning were awarded to Navegar from Kingsway School in Orewa, and Attis Corp of Rosmini College, respectively.

Enterprise New Zealand Trust Chairman, Tony Caughey, of law firm, Minter Ellison Rudd Watts, presented the first Award of the afternoon, the Graphic Impact Business Card Award, also to Adrial Enterprises. In addition to cash prizes for the Oral Presentation and Business Planning Awards, Adrial Enterprises won the opportunity for the design and printing of 200 business cards, from Graphic Impact in Takapuna.

“Each of the presentations was impressive,” said Enterprise North Shore Young Enterprise Scheme Co-ordinator, Judy von Weichardt. “Certainly Adrial and the two runners-up Image Converters and Tick Tock stood out. But the grasp that each team had of key financial information, such as determining break-even point and analysing their cashflow forecasts and pricing strategies, belie their relative inexperience in business,” said Mrs. von Weichardt. “Clearly, North Shore’s Young Enterprise Scheme is proving beneficial to all involved; students, teachers and parents alike, and as a consequence, the community as a whole.”

The next challenge for North Shore’s Young Enterprise business teams is completing their entries for the More FM advertising competition, closing on 27 May. Winners will receive $5,000 in More FM radio advertising time. Teams will also continue developing and marketing their products and services, ahead of the Auckland region Young Enterprise Scheme Trade Fair, scheduled for Sunday 7 August in Aotea Square.
