With over 30 years in the seafood industry, Gary Monk's contribution to the North Shore has been vast.


Business involvement

Gary graduated from Auckland University with a Bachelor of Law in 1975 and was admitted to the Bar the following year. He then embarked on a career in the seafood industry, establishing Takapuna-based Intersea Limited in 1983. Intersea continues to export frozen seafood to  China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, Mozambique, the United Kingdom, Greece and the Balkans.

 

Over the years Gary has played an active role in the industry trade associations with positions on:

  • NZ Fish Exporters Association

  • NZ Fishing Industry Association

  • NZ Fishing Industry Board Marketing Council

  • Sea Freight Council

  • Airfreight Council

  • Mussel Marketing Advisory Board

Gary is a shareholder and non-executive Chairman of Mathias International Limited, a privately owned New Zealand company that exports agricultural products, vegetables, poultry and seafood. The company employs 30 people in Auckland and has wholly owned subsidiaries in Melbourne, Cape Town, London, Dalian, and Buenos Aires.


He is a director and non executive chairman of New Zealand Light Leathers Limited (NZLL), a Timaru tannery producing red deer leather to the major fashion houses of Europe and to China and the USA; and is also a director of Radio New Zealand Ltd.


Whilst still a member of the trade association, Gary is now focused on Intersea, directorships, family and becoming more actively involved in the North Shore community.

  • Sponsor of The Pumphouse

  • Long time supporter of Auckland University Rugby Club (played and coached in the 1970s)

  • Supporter of the John Drake Memorial Scholarship.

  • Founding trustee of the St. Patrick's Day Golf Charitable Trust

  • Trustee of the North Harbour Charitable Trust

  • Former judge of the AIMES Awards

  • Board member of the Force netball team (2000 to 2005), in the National Bank Cup Competition

  • Intersea sponsored North Harbour Rugby (1996 to 2000) and is a founding member of the North Harbour Stadium

  • Long time supporter of North Shore Hospice and the Wilson Centre

  • Became a Justice of the Peace in1998

  • Member of the Institute of Directors

  • Was on the task force team that produced the Harbour Force Submission on Auckland Governance presented to the Royal Commission in 2008
