Attracting Business to North Shore City

Enterprise North Shore (ENS) and the North Shore City Council have joined together to facilitate a programme which attracts specific industries to set up business in the area.

Massey University has produced research into the industries the North Shore would benefit from attracting and found that the information communication technology, education, health and high performance sports sectors are areas of opportunities for the city to pursue.

The Targeted Business Attraction Programme, using this research, is working towards attracting these types of companies, whether they are new or existing, to the North Shore.

According to Warren Kitchin, ENS Trustee and a main driver behind TBAP, the initiative will help make the North Shore a more attractive place to set up business.

“This is North Shore’s first attempt to structure and centralise a programme into a format which makes it as easy as possible for companies to get a foothold in the area,” says Warren.

The industries identified in the Massey University study were named because the North Shore has the labour force and infrastructure in place to maintain and grow these business types.

“Over the next ten years the amount of commercial land available will be limited and it is these sectors that we are targeting that can be run efficiently from a more intensified area,” says Warren.

As well as helping these companies establish themselves in the area, the business attraction programme also has goals of providing on-going support. It will act as a hub for facilitating issues and maintain connections, identifying needs and help new businesses where needed.

Recently a software company from Ireland moved operations to New Zealand. Having a point of contact that could cut down the process of building contacts from scratch is definitely attractive to international companies and made it particularly easier for its transition to the Shore.

But it’s not only the international companies that the North Shore is looking to attract. Both new and established businesses from around the country are also seen as potential opportunities to entice to the area.
