Economic Overview
North Shore City is home to about 22,000 businesses, just over 6% of all businesses in NZ.
The principal industry is the property and business services industry, with almost 40% of all businesses within the City falling within that category. The next biggest industry is construction. 4.7% of the total number of employees in New Zealand (nearly 81,000) work in North Shore City. By far the largest percentage of these are employed in the retail trade (16.2%), with 14.6% working in the property and business services industry and 12.2% in the wholesale trade. The North Shore City Council’s Economic Development Strategy outlines a detailed plan which aims to achieve city-wide economic development objectives to create sustainable wealth and quality of life for all, while protecting and respecting the environment. Although the strategy touches on the interwoven aspects of social, cultural and environmental well-being, it is focused on economic well-being. A key part of the initiative is its objective to work in partnership with regional, local and national entities, government agencies, the community, Iwi and commercial organisations to achieve these goals.

The role of the North Shore City Council in realising this vision is to ensure land, infrastructure and amenity investment and planning throughout the city together with its town centres are strategically driven to manage economic growth. To do so, it is focused on establishing consistent regulatory processes, a world-class telecommunications platform and high quality infrastructure and planning. Underpinning the City’s success will be a series of town centres that each makes a significant contribution to the distinctive identity of North Shore City.
North Shore City Council also encourages businesses to adopt sustainable development practices that preserve and, where possible, enhance the quality of the land, water and air. It has initiated a number of programmes promoting sustainability and assisting businesses with resource efficiency and waste reduction.
