Living in North Shore City

Begin with a warm climate and beautiful natural environment; add great recreational and sporting facilities, a thriving arts and café scene, and plenty of business and employment opportunities. Mix them all together and the result is North Shore City - known as New Zealand's 'Lifestyle City.'

Where is North Shore City?
As the name suggests, North Shore City lies along the northeastern coastline of the Auckland region. It covers an area of 12,979 hectares and has 160 kilometres of coastline.

From North Shore City, central Auckland is only a short drive across the Harbour Bridge - or a ferry ride from its suburbs of Devonport, Birkenhead, Northcote Point or Bayswater.

A bit of history
North Shore City is one six territorial local authorities making up the Auckland region. The others are Auckland, Waitakere and Manukau Cities and Franklin and Rodney Districts.

North Shore City was formed in 1989 from the amalgamation of several distinct communities, each with a unique history and character. From Devonport, with its the Edwardian seaside village charm to the bush-clad hills of Albany and much of Birkenhead, the city is proud of its diversity, natural beauty and excellent lifestyle and facilities.

Another day in paradise …
As well as a growing number of high quality shops and shopping centres, the city boasts many schools, three tertiary institutions, six public libraries, modern hospitals, world-class sports facilities and many excellent restaurants, bars, cafes and live entertainment venues.

With two thirds of the population of North Shore City living within two kilometres of a beach, it is hardly surprising that activities like swimming, sailing, fishing, windsurfing, paragliding and kite sailing are popular with the city's residents - not to mention the many visitors who come here each year.

There are 20 safe swimming beaches in North Shore City. Most have plenty of car parking and other facilities, but a few are only accessible only by foot, making them the preserve of locals and well-informed or adventurous visitors.

There are plenty of activities away from the water too. Sports fans of almost every code are catered for, parks and bush reserves provide plenty of opportunity to enjoy the city's natural environment and there are also many fine restaurants, bars, cafés, entertainment venues and opportunities to enjoy the arts.

The city also abounds with parks, nature reserves and areas of native and regenerating bush. Walks through these areas allow residents and visitors alike to enjoy the magnificent flora and bird life.

Part of the greater Auckland region
Auckland is situated on a narrow isthmus between the Waitemata and Manukau harbours in the northern part of New Zealand's North Island. It is the fastest growing region in the country and is home to around 1.3 million people - one third of New Zealand's population. Of these, over 200,000 live in North Shore City.

There is much to see and do in Auckland too. Visit the official web site of the City of Sails for comprehensive information on where to go, what to do, how to get there, and much more.
